Outreach Services

Canterbury City Community Centre works in partnership with a range of organisations to deliver accessible, high-quality services to the Lakemba community. These outreach services are provided onsite at the Centre by trusted partner organisations and are designed to improve access to health, counselling, and legal support.

Lakemba Women’s Health Clinic

The Lakemba Women’s Health Clinic operates once per month from Canterbury City Community Centre at 130 Railway Parade, Lakemba. The clinic aims to improve the health and wellbeing of women in the local area by increasing access to preventative health care and screening services.

The clinic is staffed by a women’s health nurse employed by Leichhardt Women’s Community Health Centre. All services are free and confidential.

Women are seen by appointment for a range of women’s health issues, including:

  • Cervical screening
  • Breast health
  • Contraception advice
  • Menopause support
  • Pelvic floor assessment
  • Sexual health, including STI screening and safe sex advice
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screening
  • Emotional health and wellbeing
  • Postnatal check-ups

Referrals are also provided to recommended general practitioners, health services, and community supports.

STARTTS – Trauma and Torture Counselling Services

The NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) provides an outreach counselling service at our Railway Parade office on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

STARTTS has supported survivors of torture and trauma from refugee and refugee-like backgrounds in NSW since 1988. Their mission is to support healing and recovery while assisting individuals and organisations to deliver effective, culturally sensitive services.

STARTTS provides a broad range of clinical services, including:

  • Assessment
  • Short- and long-term therapeutic counselling
  • Family and group interventions

To improve access for clients experiencing multiple stressors, STARTTS delivers outreach services in areas with significant refugee and asylum seeker communities.

Marrickville Legal Centre

In partnership with Marrickville Legal Centre, we offer free and confidential legal advice at Canterbury City Community Centre, 130 Railway Parade, Lakemba, once a month.

Speak with a friendly and experienced lawyer from MLC about your legal concerns. No appointment is required – simply drop in.

This monthly legal advice clinic is open to everyone and is held on the last Wednesday of each month, 9:30am – 12:30pm.

Areas of legal advice include:

  • Consumer and debt matters, including fines
  • Tenancy and strata issues
  • Traffic offences and minor criminal charges
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Employment matters
  • Complaints about police or government agencies
  • Victims compensation
  • Discrimination
  • Domestic and family violence
  • Family law, including divorce and parenting after separation

Please note that advice cannot be provided on immigration, defamation, or personal injury matters. However, clients can be referred to appropriate services for these issues.
